The Opium of Our Darkness

In the film, Scorpio (a.k.a. Dark Night of the Soul), the main character forces four unlucky people to smoke an opiate that forces them to see with their minds eye. It is referred to as the black opium of the unknown. I found an interesting parallel between my own inner darkness and drug use and that is that once you're down in it, it's hard to climb out of. Now I have never been a drug addict myself but I have seen friends struggle with it and I can relate that, metaphorically, to my own sinking feelings that inspired the 1998 material on this release.

It seemed to me, at the time, that the darker things got the less reality I would have to endure, but of course nothing could have been further from the truth.
